Embarking on the FARMacy journey at Monroe Health Center means joining a mission of change. West Virginia, unfortunately, is at the forefront of chronic diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. But through our partnership with the WVU Extension Office and the wider FARMacy WV initiative, we aim to turn the tide.

The FARMacy program opens doors to affordable, fresh produce and food preparation education, specifically designed for patients battling chronic diseases. Our pilot program in Union, WV, is just the beginning.

While our participant slots for 2023 are already filled, your future involvement is keenly anticipated. Connect with your MHC provider to discover how you can participate in upcoming events.

How it works

FARMacy is a 15-week health initiative giving selected patients a $25 weekly ‘Prescription’ for fresh produce, redeemable at the Union Senior Center’s Farmer’s Market. This program, targeting patients whose health could benefit from fresh produce, will be extended to all MHC service areas in the future.

WEEK 1 RECIPES

This weeks recipes focus on the use of Cruciferous vegetables which are rich in vitamins and minerals such as folate and vitamin k. (Click the links below)

Week 2 includes a variety of produce from the gourd family. These veggies are high in nutrients, but low in calories.
